The International Council of Nurses urges all healthcare professionals, including students, to promote patient or client dignity. In the UK this position is endorsed in the Nursing and Midwifery Council's code of conduct, performance and ethics.
Although dignity is complex and difficult to define, the RCN provides a simple summary: 'Dignity is concerned with how people feel, think and behave in relation to the worth or value of themselves and others.
