Treating a patient with pressure ulcers taught me compassion
While on an acute placement at the end of my second year of training, I helped to look after a patient who was admitted to hospital from her home following gradual deterioration of health and reduced mobility.
The patient was unresponsive, and when a staff nurse and I came to wash her we discovered multiple lesions on her back, buttocks and thighs. We discovered that the patient had rarely left her chair in four years, despite having carers three times a day.
