Patient-centred care
Patient-centred care in today's NHS means putting the patient and their experience foremost, through communication, discussion of treatment options, potential outcomes and possible psychological effects. It empowers the patient and allows them to make choices about their healthcare. Here student nurses share their experiences of patient-centred care and what it means in practice.

- Holistic careHolistic care considers the psychological, environmental and spiritual needs of a patient, as well as the physical so that people are treated as whole human beings and the impact of the illness on their quality of life is evaluated too. - Art of good communicationThe art of effective communication is a skill that is learned with time and exposure to different situations. These nursing students explain how they used communication to help their patients through their illness or improve the quality of their care.
- Building bonds with patientsBuilding bonds with patients means building a rapport and gaining their trust. Through empathy and insight, these student nurses explain how they built bonds with their patients which positively affected their care.
- Supporting patients' familiesNursing does not end with the patient, it includes their family too. Through supporting the relatives of their patients, these student nurses learned that they had the skills and confidence to really make a difference in the NHS.

- Challenging bad practiceChallenging bad practice as a student nurse is frightening because you fear it will have negative repercussions on your placement and subsequent career in nursing.
