The Student’s Guide to Becoming a Nurse – Second edition

The Student’s Guide to Becoming a Nurse – Second edition Author: Ian Peate

Review

This comprehensive book will be indispensable throughout a student’s education. Its four parts cover all the basics – professional values, communication and interpersonal skills, nursing practice and decision-making, and leadership and management. There is also a useful glossary of terms for reference.

The exercises at the end of each chapter are invaluable for testing knowledge and understanding of the topics covered. There are innovative and imaginative crosswords, word searches and ‘fill in the blanks’ exercises.

The ‘think’ boxes throughout the text encourage reflection on particular questions and problems, and the case studies are used effectively.

The book starts with a thorough overview of the Nursing and Midwifery Council code, which is a helpful guide to the professional behaviour expected.

It emphasises the importance of effective interprofessional working in multidisciplinary teams. There is also comprehensive guidance on undertaking the initial assessments of patients, responding appropriately to deterioration in a patient’s condition and safe practice.

I highly recommend this book.
