Review

It is essential that an honest and open relationship exists between student and mentor to help bring about the delivery of safe, effective quality care. This book will go some way towards achieving this.

This pocket size aide-memoire is a clear and concise read for mentors and all those involved in mentoring. It revisits some key learning objectives, with sections on planning, establishing relationships, assessment, accountability and responsibility.

It encourages mentors to ensure that their students have a positive learning experience. This involves good planning and teaching strategies, with case studies to help reflect on aspects of mentoring and identifying individual styles.

The ethos throughout is to support students and encourage the use of reflection. The content reflects specific professional guidance, accountability and responsibility. However, it lacks some key aspects of mentoring in relation to placement audits and/or triennial review and sign-off mentors.

Readers should be mindful that this is a survival guide and not to be used as a replacement for protocols from individual professional bodies and local guidance.
