Nursing and Health: Compassion, Caring and Communication – Survival Guide

Nursing and Health: Compassion, Caring and Communication – Survival Guide Author: Barbara Smith

Review

This compact, spiralbound, laminated survival guide will appeal to nursing students and healthcare assistants wanting basic information on the fundamental components of person-centred care.

It will also appeal to experienced nurses who have perhaps lost their way and need a reminder of why they came into nursing in the first place.

There are short sections on conduct and care provision, accepting people regardless of their condition and behavior, using a strengths-based approach, holistic care, care pathways, dignity and privacy.

The information on culturally sensitive care is good, but there is little reference to the problems of communicating with patients whose command of English is poor and using family members as interpreters.

There are useful insights into critical junctures, what we can do to make a difference, putting ourselves in the patient’s shoes, meeting spiritual needs, encouraging reflective practice and dealing with complaints.

At £5.99, this book is tremendous value for money.
