Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Ageing – Biographical Approaches for Inclusive Care and Support

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Ageing – Biographical Approaches for Inclusive Care and Support Author: Richard Ward

Review

Using individual biographical narratives, this book provides an invaluable insight into the needs of the older lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) community in relation to ageing, future care and support.

There are chapters on the challenges of ageing with HIV, the carer’s role, identity in decision making and issues related to end of life care. The final section outlines community engagement and in particular support, service provision and the work undertaken by some organisations on the needs of older LGBT people.

This is a thought-provoking read. The biographical narratives give a fresh perspective into the lives, identities and needs of older LGBT individuals, and it is a useful tool to help plan and implement services.

I recommend this book to all healthcare professionals involved in the care of older people, as well as those who have an interest in the health and social welfare of LGBT individuals.
