Kelly’s Dimensions of Professional Nursing – Tenth edition

Review

The tenth edition of this standard American text is an excellent place to gain greater knowledge and understanding of the non-clinical, professional aspects of a nurse’s role. It covers many of the changes in legal issues, ethics, leadership and career management that have taken place in recent years. It starts with an historical overview of nursing and its early influences, with a discussion of the numerous career paths open to nurses as clinicians, specialists and educators. There are sections on the evolution of the modern nurse, the impact of social and scientific changes, issues and trends in nurse education, the status of nursing research, health care and human rights, nursing organisations in the United States and major international organisations. It offers perspectives on health care that will be invaluable for nurses wanting a basic understanding of healthcare provision and nursing in the US, nurses aspiring to work there and those interested in some of the terminologies and titles that are not used in the UK.
