Helen Aveyard has put together a practical and logical text that will be an invaluable guide for anyone undertaking a literature review. I enjoyed reading this book, particularly as it contains helpful suggestions to make the thought of tackling each stage of a literature review less daunting.
Aveyard, a senior lecturer at Oxford Brookes University, aims her book at students, but anyone undertaking a literature review would benefit from it.
The book follows a step-by-step approach. The text discusses reviewing the literature before looking at developing a question, identifying which literature might be useful and how to undertake a search. It then demonstrates how to critically appraise literature and synthesise findings, finishing by relating all of this to the completion of a dissertation.
A little more technical information about searching and storage of findings would be useful, but overall this is a well thought-out book.
Reviewer: Brian Burke, practice development facilitator, Northern General Hospital, Sheffield
