Advanced Practice in Healthcare is an interesting and stimulating book for those wanting to understand advanced practice and the advanced practitioner role.
Advanced practice roles are highly diverse and identifying a body of common skills is not easy. The authors pin this down by identifying three main areas for skills – clinical, management and leadership – and providing tools and information for reflection and development, and by linking these directly to advanced practice.
The content is accessible and easy to follow, with a clearly defined structure. There is an introduction to the nature of advanced practice and a discussion of the clinical skills involved in consultation, care planning and decision making, and how these relate to advance practice roles.
The authors look at management theory and skills, incorporating an interesting perspective on advanced practice in the United States. Leadership skills in relation to professionalism, clinical effectiveness and influencing others are also explored. There are reflective activities throughout the text that relate directly to the theory and practice.
