Review

This structured and accessible manual looks at practical approaches to the emergency management of a seriously ill or injured child.

The content is comprehensive and divided into six parts: introduction, life support, the seriously ill child, the seriously injured child, practical application of advanced paediatric life support and appendices. The appendices include sections on child abuse, prevention of injury, the management of pain and death.

There are chapters on managing a child with breathing difficulties, the child in shock, trauma, the burned or scalded child, human factors, and fluid and electrolyte management. Each chapter begins with learning objectives before confidently presenting the text in logical and bite-size chunks of information.

The only downside is that the manual is presented in a folder format rather than a book.

Written by experts in the field, it provides the core foundations for the UK advanced paediatric life support course. I recommend this resource for all staff working with children.
