Nursing Standard has launched a new campaign to boost the authority and status of ward sisters and charge nurses. Power to Care calls for more support for the estimated 24,000 NHS nurses managing clinical teams.
Nursing Standard worked with the RCN to ensure that patients are treated with respect. Called 'Dignity: at the heart of everything we do', the campaign gave support and direction to the UK's nursing workforce during delivery of care for patients and clients of any health status in every setting.
The Nutrition Now campaign helped nurses to improve nutrition and hydration in patients across the UK. Nutrition and hydration are essential to care, as vital as medication and other types of treatment. It is our responsibility as members of a multi-disciplinary team to ensure patients in our care have the right nutrition and hydration at the right time.
Patients count on nurses, so it is up to managers and ministers to ensure that the numbers add up. That really is the only way to keep patients safe. But as more and more nursing posts are frozen and jobs lost, there is a danger that patient care will suffer. We armed nurses with as much information as possible so they could argue the case for the right skill mix.
Charter for Change fought for a better deal for students, and campaigned for a substantial rise in the basic bursary, sufficient mentorship, childcare support, full supernumerary status on clinical placements and lastly but not least - respect.
Nursing Standard supported the Wipe it Out campaign, developed by the RCN in partnership with the Infection Control Nurses' Association, to develop minimum standards on infection control and prevention.

Nursing Standard launched Nursing the
Future - our campaign to boost the image of nursing and midwifery - in January 2004. This followed a similar campaign in the US that successfully boosted recruitment to nursing.
