Attitudes to workplace equality have changed and it makes good business sense, writes Shahnaz Ali
Eighteen years ago, a young gay man was recruited to an NHS organisation in the north west of England during the initial panic about AIDS. 'We have recruited you because we have to,' he was told. 'But do not come anywhere near us. Just get out there and work with gay people in the community.'
But one year ago, NHS North West launched a history timeline exhibition to mark the contribution of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) people to medicine and healthcare through the ages. The exhibition, which coincided with LGBT History Month 2011, was accompanied by Rainbow Voices, a short film based on interviews with LGBT staff working in the NHS.
