Vast majority of fitness to practise referrals fail to result in sanctions
More than 80 per cent of the 3,797 nurses whose fitness to practise cases were concluded by the Nursing and Midwifery Council in 2011/12 received no sanctions, according to new data.
The regulator's annual summary of the year's fitness to practise activity shows that, of these cases, more than half were dropped at the first stage after an initial assessment and around a third were closed at the second stage by an investigating committee.
