Fundraising nurse carries the flame

A children's nurse who carried the Olympic torch last week says the experience was 'one of the most amazing' of her life.

Elin Haf Davies, a scientific assessor for the European Medicines Agency, carried the torch 300 metres around Bangor in north Wales as part of the flame's 70-day tour across the UK.

Other nurses, including Royal Navy lieutenant Vicky Scott and Bradford community nurse David Lighten, are due to carry the torch before the start of the Olympic Games on July 27.

Dr Davies was chosen for the honour after she raised nearly £250,000 for health charities by rowing across the Atlantic and Indian oceans.

She said: 'It was a phenomenal experience. There were huge crowds and my family and friends turned up to support me. It was overwhelming to carry the torch.'

Dr Davies raised £190,000 for metabolic research in 2008 while working at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London and £60,000 for Breast Cancer Care a year later.
