'We must stand up and be counted'

Despite rising demand, cancer nurse specialist posts are at risk from downgrading and budget cuts, says Kathy Oxtoby

The number of cancer nurse specialists in England is increasing, but too slowly to keep up with demand, according to the National Cancer Action Team (NCAT).

Findings of the 2011 census of cancer specialist nurses in England, published in May, build on previous censuses carried out in 2007, 2009 and 2010. These are commissioned by NCAT to map the specialist nurse workforce in cancer care and help inform the way such posts are commissioned.
