Patient Dignity

Nursing Standard's Patient Dignity campaign was run with the RCN to ensure that patients are always treated with respect. Our 12-month dignity campaign began in June 2008.

Run jointly with the Royal College of Nursing, and sponsored by Smith and Nephew, it aimed to re-focus the attention of nurses on to patient dignity - to make it the heart of everything they do.

Although most nurses want to give the best care, a survey of over 2,000 nurses found most - 8 out of 10 - had left work feeling upset that they were unable to ensure their patients were treated with dignity. Although nurses said they wanted patient dignity to be regarded as a higher priority by their employers, they faced significant obstacles to delivering the kind of care they would like.

The campaign provided a range of award-winning resources and learning tools to help nurses address dignity issues at work. Featuring examples of good practice across the UK, it showed how nurses were using practical, simple devices to give dignified care - from simple red clothes pegs to close patient to setting up 'clothes banks' for patients who had stained their clothes on admission.

While we could not claim to have solved the dignity problem, we have certainly helped to highlight the need for its particular and constant focus in clinical care.
