Author: Gary Wright
Date: July 2012
Journal: Nursing Standard
Issue: Volume 26, Number 44
Keywords: Sexual health
Gary Wright recognises the importance of providing holistic care to patients with sexual health problems. As a clinical nurse specialist in sexual health in rural Australia, I see many adolescents and young adults with various sexually transmitted infections (STI), including chlamydia and gonorrhoea. As part of a holistic care plan, we undertake a detailed health assessment including risk behaviours and activities, such as drug and alcohol use, as well as condom use. A significant proportion of our patients have mental health issues, including anxiety and depression, which are often linked with substance abuse.
